Chateau de Montbrun

Just got back from France after a five day trip, I did take some camera equipment with me in the hope of photographing

European Cranes.

That wasn’t the reason for the trip; we took some family members over to see the house and see some of the local sites, one of them being Chateau de Montbrun the place where Richard the Lionheart died on the 6th April 1199 at the age of 41 from the after-effects of an arrow wound received during the siege of Chalus .

Although he was an English king he was actually French. Chateau de Montbrun was in English hands at that time and he wanted to die on English soil.

I spotted three European Cranes in a field not far from the house but wasn’t able to photograph them, none have been seen on their migration either (have to wait until next spring now to see them in flight).

I will be returning to France again in December for two weeks so it will be interesting to see what wildlife is around then.

Most of the fruit trees in the garden have produced good crops this year, the Damson tree has a few shrivelled fruits still on.

This attracts Blackcaps which gorge themselves on the fruit whilst Chiffchaffs pick off the insects on the rotting Damsons.
